One never really gets to think about history much until on happens to unearth a little piece of history – and then then the thoughts come, either as memory or speculation. Take the Elgin pocket watch, for example. When we mention the Elgin pocket watch, we evidently don't really refer to watches being created under the Elgin name as we know now. We're talking about the Elgin pocket watches that were manufactured back in the mid-nineteenth century sometime around the point when the Civil War was dying down and when the Industrial Revolution of America has proven to be the one that catapults the country from being simply a place of colonies to a full-on entity of its own.
In many ways, the Elgin pocket watch can be regarded as a symbol of that time, when what is important is the hard work put into the mass production of mechanical items. For example, the Elgin pocket watches themselves are mass-produced in the sense that they are not the traditional hand-crafted pocket watches that were being sold the years before. Of course, they were still expensive because manufacturing them costs significant amounts of money back then, but they were not quite as expensive to repair, because the machines can simply churn out the components of the watches instead of relying on skilled watch makers to replicate the broken parts and the like. The other thing that must be noted is that the sudden popularity of the Elgin pocket watch could be attributed to the sudden appreciation for practicality that Americans did not have before the Industrial Revolution. People themselves at that point have become practical, and they liked the fact that it need not be be difficult for their watches to be repaired when they are broken.
So next time you unearth a little piece of history, be sure to take the time to learn more about it.
