It's a Wrap: The Necklace Makes A Bold Statement in 2009

The necklace remains a strong fashion trend for 2009. From layering to chunky choices to bibs, the jewelry necklace has gone from accessory to the star of the show.

Collar Necklaces

Collar necklaces were in full force at the Golden Globes. Eva Mendes made an unusual choice with a Van Cleef & Arpels turquoise collar necklace showing that the gem can be just as eye-catching as diamonds. Singer/Actor Beyonce's open neckline was graced with a sparkling diamond collar necklace by Lorraine Schwartz. Meanwhile, Christina Applegate carried the floral jewelry trend beautifully with a diamond floral necklace also by Lorraine Schwartz. Paired with her yellow gown, the piece was a lovely feminine touch. Elizabeth Banks also wore a Schwartz diamond jewelry necklace -- making the jewelry designer a big winner at the Globes.

Bib Necklace

Another necklace mainstay for 2009 is the bib necklace. This Disco-era, retro look is often worn in a cascade of beads and stones that resemble a waterfall. The jewelry necklace is also worn in rhinestones and crystals. A show-stealing look, bib necklaces are a favorite of celebrities. Paired with evening wear, the bib necklace creates an elegant and strong statement there's no need to pile on additional jewelry. The bib necklace can easily stand on its own.

The Layered Necklace

Layering necklaces is a fun and dramatic way to carry off the trend, which remains strong into Spring 2009. A collection of multiple chains in a variety of metals including silver, gold and copper are one way to wear the look. Designers also offer multi-stranded necklaces in a variety of beads, such as one look that features numerous chains at various lengths. The first chain hangs like a chocker, as the others drape below it. Chains are set with beads and charms, including Swarovski crystals.

Jewel-like Lucite beads and pendants in a range of colors adorn strands of chains and feature a look made popular with gemstones. However, the triple-strand necklace achieves the trend at a much smaller price tag.

Pearls paired with a necklace continue to make a statement in 2009. The organic style features multiple strands featuring pearls held in place by visible knots, creating a contemporary look.

Link Necklaces

Evolving into a range of styles, the link necklace may be designed with large geometrics or circles in graduating sizes. Links may be textured to add visual interest or stacked to add depth. The look is especially popular in gold and silver. Jewelry necklaces may also feature pearls, glass or beads.

Some Necklace Basics

With all of the choices available today, it can be confusing choosing the right look for you. Most measure one of several standard lengths, but there can be variations on this. For the full-size or petite woman, the average length may vary. It's a good idea to try on a variety of necklaces of various lengths to see what looks best on you.

Choker Necklace

Pieces that are very short and rest above the neckline are chokers.

Collars

Typically, collar necklaces are slightly longer than the choker. They rest just below the bottom of the neck. See Golden Globe celebs, such as Beyonce, sport the look beautifully.

Bib Necklace

A dramatic take on the traditional necklace, the bib generally has a generous amount of netted detail in the front. The waterfall necklace is also similar to the bib.

Multi-Chain Necklace

Chains, which come in a variety of lengths and metals, can be layered together. This is a look that should be experimented with to achieve just the right look.

Choosing the Right Look

What type of jewelry necklace should you pair with everyday or evening wear? For starters, beads, pearls and chains are great accents for a V-, scoop- or boat-necked ensemble. There are an endless range of colorful beads to make a perfect match to the perfect outfit. When it comes to evening wear, and in particular to strapless styles, a choker or bib will accentuate a beautiful neckline. A strand of small dazzling beads or gems is another possibility. Those wearing a more delicate look should avoid big chunky necklaces and opt instead for the layered chain look with sporadically spaced beads.
